Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives broadens North American line of wine and spirits products

As a result of its acquisition by The Fedrigoni Group, global leader in the production of high value-added special papers for packaging, publishing, and graphics, as well as premium labels and self-adhesive materials, Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives North America, formerly Acucote and Arconvert brands, are better able to service the wine and spirits industry. Exhibit to feature new products in wine and spirits, home and personal care, food and beverage and Smart Labeling

Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives, part of The Fedrigoni Group, a global leader in the production of high value-added special papers for packaging, publishing, and graphics, as well as premium labels and self-adhesive materials, will be attending Labelexpo Americas for the first time September 13-15 in Rosemont, Illinois. The company will feature new products and services in four areas: Wine and Spirits, Home and Personal Care, Food and Beverage and Smart Labeling.

A highlight of the home and personal care portion of the booth will be Open and Close Wet Wipes – monomaterial self-adhesive solutions that facilitate the recycling process – specifically designed for soft and semi-rigid labels for hand, baby, cosmetic, household and pet wipes. Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives provides a patent which enables semi-rigid Open and Close labels to behave similarly to rigid plastic lids while being more sustainable. Also featured in home and personal care are recycled content films and coupon solutions.

Featured in Food & Beverage is WOff, a Wash Off Adhesive. With APR (Association of Plastic Recyclers) certification expected in mid-July, this water-based formula provides debonding of non-recyclable label materials from PET and glass containers – making them recoverable. Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives will also include dissolvable facestocks and coupon solutions for Food & Beverage in this portion of the booth.

Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives to showcase Open & Close labels at the World of Wipes Conference

Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives will attend the World of Wipes Conference June 27 – 30 in Chicago, IL.

Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives’ range of Open & Close solutions includes Polypropylene and Polyethylene films with a top-performing removable adhesive for high tear resistance, clean removability, good conformability and top reliability. The range is designed for hand wipes, baby wipes, cosmetic wipes, household wipes and more – making opening easier, and ensuring secure product closure.

According to Melissa Harton, Marketing Manager, North America, “The latest market trends suggest adopting a mono-material approach (PE or BOPP) for both the flex packs and the Open & Close labels. Our range of PE and BOPP constructions ensures full compatibility with this trend for soft and semi-rigid Open & Close labels. To make semi-rigid Open & Close labels more similar to rigid plastic lids, Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives has developed a patent that allows the label to remain open during use to facilitate the removal of the wet wipes from the flexible packaging. Acucote introduces recycled content for Direct Thermal Printers

Acucote, part of Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives, has introduced a new Recycled Polypropylene film product for Direct Thermal printing.

Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives’ vision for the future is to increase the volume of advanced Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) solutions in its product portfolio from 35% to 70% by 2030. In an effort to work toward this sustainable goal, Acucote is now providing an alternative sustainable film solution for Direct Thermal printers.

The newest offering is a BPA and BPS free 3 mil Matte White Recycled DT Polypropylene containing 30% recycled PP core. It supports high definition imaging and features excellent water, alcohol and oil resistance – ideal for retail, logistics, health and food industries. The face is primer coated for exceptional adhesive anchorage for both removable and permanent adhesives.

For enhanced sustainability, converters can pair the DT Polypropylene film with .92, 1.2 and 1.5 mil PET liners created with up to 50% recycled resin or an FSC® liner. All materials are  available as a custom coat at 60″ x 5,000′.

Design for recycling is among the key strategies pursued by Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives to reach their sustainability goals. The strategy includes favoring the recycling and reuse of materials, increasing the use of recycled materials as much as possible, and reducing the quantity of raw materials used. Moreover, the Division is striving to, wherever possible, eliminate or reduce materials that are difficult to recycle.

Fedrigoni finalizes acquisition of Spanish manufacturer Divipa

The global Group confirms its interest in the promising premium self-adhesives products sector, where it has carried out five M&A operations in the past two years with the aim of strengthening its position as the third player in the world – first in the wine label segment.

The Fedrigoni Group, announces the acquisition of Spanish company Divipa. Divipa is located in Derio, a few kilometers from Bilbao, where it develops, manufactures and distributes self-adhesive materials, with estimated sales of 24 million euros in 2021 and about fifty employees.

Divipa was founded in 1971 by the Alvaro family, which has transferred 100% of the capital to Fedrigoni but some of its executives remain in the management team. With this acquisition, the fifth in two years in the Self-Adhesives sector, Divipa joins Ritrama (Italy), IP Venus and Ri-Mark (Mexico) and Acucote (United States). This acquisition further strengthens the Fedrigoni Group’s position as the third player in the world for self-adhesive materials, where it operates through several brands such as Arconvert, Manter and Ritrama. In fact, Fedrigoni is today the main producer of wine labels and plays a leading role in high-tech self-adhesive labels and films for food, pharmaceutical, automotive, personal and home care sectors and many more.

“The entry of Divipa into the Group is a new milestone in our growth path in the world of self-adhesive materials,” confirms Marco Nespolo, CEO of the Fedrigoni Group. “We have not taken one step backwards in moving our strategic plan forward: broadening the offer in attractive segments and expanding our global presence. These targeted acquisitions enable us to obtain a direct stronghold in all the main geographical markets. We extend a welcome to our Divipa colleagues who are joining our 4,000 global employees.”

Acucote Introduces BioPreferredⓇ Product Line

25 USDA Certified Biobased Products Added to its Sustainability Portfolio

As consumer brands are increasingly demanding sustainable labels on their packaged goods without added material costs, Acucote has introduced a line of 25 USDA Certified Biobased products. Materials include coated, uncoated, fluorescents, tag and digital print media. BioPreferred Certification is awarded by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).  Through this program, the USDA validates the biobased content of products through third-party testing to the ASTM D6866 standard.  This third-party testing determines whether or not a commercial or industrial product is composed of biological elements.

Each of the facestocks in this new portfolio are certified by the USDA BioPreferred program as being constructed with 87% biobased components when combined with our CP1 biodegradable adhesive and 40# liner.  The minimum to earn BioPreferred designation is 25%.

CP1 adhesive also complies with 21CFR175.105, the Child Toy and Safety Act, TPCH, CPSIA, REACH and CA Prop 65.  CP1 is acid, BPA and APEO free.

Acucote delivers restaurant labeling solution to Wayne Trademark

Wayne Trademark first opened its doors in 1938 in High Point, NC as a manufacturer of heat seal labels for the local hosiery industry.  Wayne Sullivan started the business and ran it for 30 years.  Ray Burrow purchased Wayne Trademark in 1969.  Today, his son, Gary, operates the successful business.  In its 80+ years of operations, Wayne Trademark has continued to open doors into different arenas in the printing business.

As new technologies have emerged, Wayne Trademark has been there. Flexographic printing was still in its infancy when they acquired their first Flexo press in 1967. Additional Flexo presses have been added through the years, and they have expanded their capabilities with them. In 1982, they moved into the world of lithography, which grew their offerings exponentially. As print has gone digital in the last several years, so has Wayne Trademark.  Today, with Flexo, Offset, and Digital Printing capabilities, Wayne Trademark can provide their customers with a variety of print products to meet their needs.  With these broad capabilities, they are able to focus on Food and Beverage, Clothing, Industrial, Automotive, Cleaning Products, and Dairy Label markets.

Wayne Trademark prides itself on offering great service and reliability along with great sales and customer service.  This prompted them to begin purchasing from Acucote over twenty years ago.  The longevity of this relationship is important to both companies. According to Gary Burrow, Owner, Wayne Trademark, “Acucote shares the same principle of excellence and is actually located within a half hour of our plant.”

Over the years, Acucote’s Application Development capabilities have been important to Wayne Trademark and they have sent a lot of custom projects to the Acucote team.

The Challenge

Wayne Trademark-4548When Wayne Trademark needed an alternative to a wash-off product used in the restaurant industry, they came to the Acucote Application Development Team for assistance.  The label is applied to containers with a date and time stamp for food rotation.  The container then goes into an industrial dishwasher and the label must remove cleanly in this process.  Burrow notes that,  “We came to Acucote with this challenge because of Acucote’s ability in the past to find solutions to our problems. We looked at competitive products, but other suppliers offered unacceptable lead times and inconsistent delivery.”

The Solution

Wayne Trademark-4555As the Acucote Application Development Team began the project, initial raw materials came with a large minimum order quantity (MOQ) and price tag.  After additional research, Acucote was able to identify an alternative valued supplier with a reduced MOQ.

Acucote ran successful trials and met Wayne Trademark’s requirements with their dissolvable DS1 adhesive and water soluble Matte Litho facestock. DS1 is a water-based acrylic emulsion mid peel removable adhesive designed to dissolve in water.  Specifically designed to be used in conjunction with dissolvable papers or films, it adheres well to metal, HDPE and other LSE plastics.

The Outcome

This solution worked perfectly for Wayne Trademark’s requirements.  Burrow notes that, “It prints very well and our operators love the material.”  He adds that “most importantly, our customer is thrilled because our delivery times have now improved.  Acucote provided us with shorter lead times and consistent supply on hand to produce the product needed.”

The long-term relationship with Acucote has allowed Wayne Trademark to have more customized solutions for their customers. In the future Burrow looks forward to partnering with Acucote to penetrate additional opportunities in household cleaning, piggyback products and food.

It can now count on a new plant and a stronger commercial presence in North America (where it was already present with own operations in California and the distributor GPA), together with the Mexican company, Industria Papelera Venus, acquired in December

Milan, 22 June 2021 – Fedrigoni SpA, global group leader in the production of high value-added special papers for packaging, publishing and graphics, as well as premium labels and self-adhesive materials, has completed the acquisition of Acucote Inc., a company headquartered in Graham, North Carolina, which develops, manufactures and distributes self-adhesive materials, with a leading position in the US market, a turnover of over $70 million and 142 employees.

Acucote was founded 34 years ago by John Leath, who owns it together with his family. With one plant and 4 distribution centres, the company is an excellent opportunity for Fedrigoni, which intends to extend its presence in the United States, an extremely interesting market in which the Group is already well known and appreciated for its label materials for fine wines.

With this third acquisition in 18 months, after the Italian Ritrama and the Mexican IP Venus in the self-adhesives sector, Fedrigoni further strengthens its position as the third global player for self-adhesive materials, where it operates through numerous brands such as Arconvert, Manter and Ritrama. The Group is a global leader in wine labelling and plays a leading role in high-tech self-adhesive labels and films for food, household, logistics, pharma, beverage and personal care. Flexibility drives long-term relationship with Nova Label

Located in Cheverly, MD, Nova Label Company has commercially manufactured quality printed pressure- sensitive labels since 1982. A family- run company, Nova Label was founded by Sandy Bernstein, who had already been in the label business for 25 years. Sandy and his wife, Florene, semi-retired in 2000 and their son-in-law Alan Rich took over day-to-day operations.

With over 50 years’ experience in the label industry, Nova Label has broad expertise in packaging, direct marketing, and variable data label needs.

Today they produce labels on rolls, cut sheets and continuous forms. Their primary customers are in direct mail and consumer packaging for a variety of industries. Labels can be any size or shape and they offer a variety of printing technologies including digital as well as a wide assortment of facestocks and adhesives, making the process easy and ideal to create a solution for their customers’ applications. Whether a customer needs 100 or 1,000,000 custom labels, Nova Label can fulfill their specific needs.


Nova Label also produces decals for a variety of applications such as bumper stickers or windows. Decals can be any size or shape and printed on either a white or clear material with permanent or removable adhesive, or on clear static cling.

The Challenge

20200326_163054Many years ago, Nova Label began looking for a substrate provider who offered flexibility with custom coating as well as stocking a large portfolio of products. Alan recalls that, “We were always considering what we could offer to be different from the competition. We needed quick solutions for challenging applications.”

He adds that for some applications that needed developing, cost was definitely a factor. “We also needed a provider who would offer us value at a cost-competitive level.”

These challenges became the basis for a long-term relationship with Acucote.


Nova Label has now been purchasing from Acucote for 19 years and both companies place great value on the longevity of this relationship. Alan notes that Acucote’s “flexibility in providing custom coated material and their large portfolio of products makes it easy to buy from them.” He also appreciates the fact that Acucote meets the needs of a standing order of material that is “at the ready for slitting and shipping.”

The top feature, however, which he enjoys is Acucote’s eagerness to innovate together. “Acucote rarely says no to helping us develop an application. So with any new opportunity that comes along – we check in with them first! Acucote takes the time to learn all the details to see if they can develop the application.”

Alan was one of the very first Members of the Flexo Label Advantage Group (FLAG) which he joined in 2010 and Acucote became a FLAG Vendor Partner last July. Alan adds, “Although we had been using Acucote long before FLAG came along, I was hoping Acucote could become a FLAG Vendor Partner. Once it happened, it’s just icing on the cake — a win-win for everyone.”

Lastly, consistency remains a key aspect of Alan’s ongoing trust in Acucote. This was particularly relevant during challenging supply chain issues as a result of the pandemic and storms which disrupted the chemical industry in the late winter of 2021.

And at the end of the day, Alan notes that “they are just nice people to work with!”

Acucote Expands Sustainable Portfolio with Line of Water Dissolvable Labels

Acucote has continued to expand its portfolio of sustainable products with the introduction of a water dissolvable adhesive and two dissolvable paper stocks.

These new products are designed for any type of application requiring a temporary label. They are ideal for the food service industry, and more specifically food rotation labels.

DS1 is a water-based acrylic emulsion adhesive designed to disperse in either cold or hot water, leaving zero residue. DS1 adheres to metal, HDPE and other LSE plastic containers.

Acucote’s newest dissolvable papers — 40# Water Soluble Litho and 47# Water Dissolvable Direct Thermal — dissolve completely when immersed in water. The combination of DS1 with these dissolvable papers sends less material to the landfill and consumes less energy because the label does not need to be processed in a recycling facility.

According to Earl Curran, vice president business development, “The Acucote Sustainability Team has developed these new products in response to demand from converters and their brand owners for increased sustainable label options. We’re very pleased to expand our portfolio with products that are well suited for the booming food service industry.”

Acucote’s 40# Water Soluble Litho is available with the DS1 adhesive at 45” x 5,000’ with a 5-7 day lead-time. The 47# Water Dissolvable Direct Thermal paper is available with the DS1 adhesive at 55” x 5,000’ with a 5-7 day lead-time.
